You can't beat the taste and health benefits of a freshly picked vegetable!  Supermarket produce is generally not ripe or over ripe and neither is appealing.  Here in the Northeast we crave the tastes of all that our home gardens can seasonally produce.  Winter is rough and we are presented with hard tomatoes, wrinkly green beans and rotten squash all the time in those markets.  The produce managers must have tough choices if this is the best they can do.  Most of it isn't even grown in the U.S.A. and is loaded with the unknown factor.

So throughout Spring and Summer we enthusiastically plant our favorites and dine like royalty until the first frost.  We can, jar and freeze our vegetable garden yields as much as we can.  But there's nothing like coming into your kitchen with a basket of freshly picked vegetables in August.  Below are some links to great advise and great recipes.  If anyone has an old family heirloom recipe from scratch using fresh vegetables, contact us and we will post them on a "Family Heirloom Recipe" page here.

From Dr. Mercola: "Eating more fresh vegetables is one of the simplest choices you can make to improve your overall health. A vegetable-rich diet can help protect you from arthritis, heart disease, stroke, dementia, cancer, and can even help slow down your body's aging process. A recent study found that people who consume seven or more portions of vegetables and fruit a day have a 42 percent lower risk of dying from any cause, compared to those who eat less than one portion—and vegetables have the greatest impact.    But vegetables can also benefit you in some surprising ways. Did you know that certain vegetables can help reduce bloating, and others can give your skin a more youthful glow? They can even improve how you handle stress—and adapting to stress is critically important to your mental AND physical health."  You can use peelings and veggies to make beautiful dyes, natural cosmetics and soothing creams too.

We stock some very cool gadgets for growing, harvesting, food processing and preservation and other unbelievable "must have" gadgets you never knew existed before in our Vegetable Shop that you can't live without and stock LIVE vegetable plants guaranteed to grow that will be shipped to your door when it's the right time for you to plant them.

May you enjoy your mouth-watering, prize winning harvest and have fun doing it!

"I ate no butcher's meat, lived chiefly on fruits, vegetables, and fish, and never drank a glass of spirits or wine until my wedding day. To this I attribute my continual good health, endurance, and an iron constitution. John James Audubon"
