How To Make Compost At Home Composting is one of the best things a person can do for the environment. The controlled decomposition of organic material benefits plant growth and contains several nutrients. Compost itself conditions soil, increases soil moisture retention, provides beneficial microbes and microorganisms and improves and stabilizes the pH level in soil. Soil improvement is primary in any type of gardening. Anything that was once alive may be composted. Fallen leaves, grass clippings, trimmings from shrubs and plants and expired plants make great compost material. Anything large or woody must be shredded. Kitchen scraps without fat, bones or meat may be used in your compost. Earthworms also process organic materials, aerate the soil, leaving behind nutrient-rich castings. All kitchen waste used for compost must be buried at least eight inches down to prevent animals that could be a problem. The home gardener can easily make a compost holding area, or "bin". Wire, wood pallets or hardware cloth are commonly used to construct a circle and cover it with black plastic. It must be kept moist and it must be turned during the decomposition and when new material is added. Sod may also be added and it is wise to begin you compost with a good layer of peat moss in the bottom. It make take from 2 months to two years to have the compost material decompose thoroughly and properly. Composting Problems 1) Bad Odor - there is not enough air in the pile, turn it and add courser materials 2) Damp And Sweet Smelling - there is not enough nitrogen, add grass clippings, manure, bloodmeal or ammonium sulphate (found in our Fertilizer Shop) 3) Dry in the Center Of The Compost - wet the compost material as you turn it 4) Damp And Only The Center Of The Pile Is Warm - the compost pile is too small, use the old compost and add additional material |
